Facebook has set-up a special unit to monitor and curb hate speech on its platform, Sri Lankan Translation Community founder Yasiru Kuruwitage said.
The special unit was established since the government, very recently had to block social media platforms due to the spread of hate speech against minority communities on Facebook, he explained.
Mr. Kuruwitage noted that the special unit has been tasked with countering hate speech by removing accounts which violate Facebook standards and also identifying and removing content which could provoke communal tensions.
The unit has also been entrusted with the responsibility of educating users on material which could incite violence in the country.
Meanwhile, Facebook has also sought the assistance of the Translation Community to overcome language translation issues in Sinhala, Mr. Kuruwitage pointed out.
